A brief update for all of you following my earlier blogs. To cut to the chase, the finger has been improving gradually over the last few weeks since Episode 13. I visited the hospital last week for two appointments – with Infectious Diseases and Orthopaedics – and was told by both they didn’t want to see me again for 6 weeks. So any thoughts of further surgery to de-bulk have been put on hold for the time being. Without doubt, the swelling is reducing and the sinuses (the leaky parts) are slowly closing up and disappearing (see photo).

The finger still won’t bend of it’s own accord but I can now bend it using my other hand or next-door finger. In fact, I need to exercise it regularly to build it up, though the tendons are still encased in the bacterial growth between the joints.

The only regular leak is from the mini Vesuvius on the top of the finger, but even this is drying up and reducing in size day by day. For those who don’t see it on a daily basis, they say it looks much improved.

Piano playing with two hands is becoming more of a reality, and some regular practise will strengthen the tendons (Oops! Not ‘muscles’ as I stated previously – thanks John!) (Oops again! Correction: I’ve now been informed I do have muscles in the base of my finger, which is where the bacteria is residing – thanks, fishtanx).

Thanks to those who contacted me – I’ve taken on board the fact that this bacteria likes a temperature of 32.5 degrees, which explains why it prefers living in our extremities where it is cooler – arms, hands, feet – but any warmer and it can’t survive. So to kill it off it is necessary, in my case, to keep the hand as hot as is bearable, even sleeping with a plastic bag over it! I’ve tried this but it is very uncomfortable – though it may have triggered it’s demise.

Let’s hope Episode 15 can boast about independent flexing of the finger!

Of course, as you are well aware, there are no muscles in the fingers, only tendons. Glad things are going ok.

Thanks.I’ve edited the blog and credited you! I don’t know what’s going on in my finger half the time!

The muscles that control the finger are at the base of the finger, WHERE THE INFECTION IS. David’s original comment was accurate.

Thanks fishtanx – I’ve added a correction to the correction and credited you!

Am very sure you have considered this already so forgive me for suggesting the bleeding obvious but if the bacteria dislike a temperature above 32.5 & that might help finish off the little blighters, can you not spend some time every day zapping your fingers with a higher temperature? A hairdryer? One of those arthritis heat pads? Warmed up waxy strips wrapped around? Or do they need to be at a higher temperature for hours? I agree with others that the Vesuvial growths do look much less angry than the last time I saw them. Hope the progress continues. Love, Pamxx

      Hi Pam
I have considered a variety of ways of keeping the hand hot, including those you have described – even using a Dyson hand dryer in the Gents! However, when I told the docs they were sceptical of this anecdotal story, though they conceded that the culture can only grow at 32.5 degrees. It seems to be healing, albeit very slowly, I need to get to a hot country for a while! See you in Sept unless you are down our way before. XX

I’m very curious how you are doing. No posts for 4 months!

Hi fishtanx … and thank you for your interest and concern. Apologies for my lack of communication. I do keep intending to write the next blog but life overtakes me just when I plan to get down to it … I’ve been away for one of the months and the weather has been unusually excellent this summer, discouraging me from going indoors to write!
Briefly, all is coming along well and the finger is now healed as far as any leaking goes. However, it is still ‘lumpy’ around the palm joint and I still can’t fully bend it, but better than a few months ago. I’m having fortnightly hand therapy sessions which are really good and small improvements are noted at each visit. The downside is I’ve now developed ‘trigger thumb’ and so have to sleep with it in a brace till we see if it cures itself, or not. I do intend to write the next blog soon as you are not the only one curious to know how it is proceeding!
